Museums in Southwark, London: Complete Guide & Map

One of London’s most ancient areas, Southwark was for centuries the site of the only bridge across the Thames. This made it central to the city’s story, and it’s maintained that importance into the present day, with modern icons like The Shard sharing space with the borough’s medieval history.

Today Southwark’s 15 museums reflect this rich heritage. Most of them can be found in a cluster of museums along the banks of the River Thames, including the brilliant HMS Belfast, one of the best museums about World War 2.

Beyond this are some of London’s more unusual museum spaces – such as the macabre Old Operating Theatre Museum and the utterly unique, slightly bizarre and very creepy House of Dreams Museum.

Southwark is also home to many of London’s best art galleries. It boasts the Tate Modern (London’s best art gallery, in my view); the South London Gallery (one of the city’s leading modern art galleries); Dulwich Picture Gallery (the oldest purpose built art gallery in the world), among several others.
