Tower Hamlets is the heart of London’s historic East End, stretching from the Tower of London all the way to the shining glass towers of Canary Wharf.
It’s home to 13 museums, including two of London’s best history museums – the massive Tower of London and the Museum of London Docklands, exploring life in the East End. For kids, there’s the highly interactive Young V&A.
Tower Hamlets also has some real hidden gems, lesser-known but excellent museums like the Ragged School Museum and Dennis Severs’ House, a unique way to discover London’s history, in a performance space crossed with a museum.
In terms of art galleries, Tower Hamlets boasts one of London’s best: the Whitechapel Gallery, a hugely influential modern art centre that has kickstarted many artists’ careers. There are also a couple of community-run, not-for-profit galleries worth visiting: the Chisenhale Gallery and the Nunnery Gallery.
