What it is

Museum tags: Art; Impressionism; Modern art

London’s best collection of impressionism, housed within the huge, beautiful Somerset House complex. Includes many of the big hitters, like Van Gogh, Monet, Manet and Degas, plus the biggest collection of Cézzanes in the country. Also hosts temporary exhibitions, often focused on more contemporary art.

My personal take on Courtauld Gallery
Is it too grandiose to call this London’s equivalent to the Musée d’Orsay? It’s certainly smaller and less grand, but the art on display is of a similar calibre — and it’s the closest thing London has.

If you’re a fan of the Impressionists, this (along with the National Gallery) is the best place to go in the UK. Compared to the d’Orsay it’s pocket-sized, but the collection is exceptional — Manet, Cézanne, Renoir, Van Gogh. It’s one of my favourite galleries in the city.

(Plus, Somerset House is a stunning building!)
