What it is

Museum tags: Design and fashion; Art; Design; Ethnographic and world cultures; Social history

A world-leading museum of design, covering everything from graphics to fashion, furniture to technology. Its permanent exhibition, Designer Maker User, explores the history of contemporary design — how things are conceived, made, and used, and how this has evolved over time. It’s wide-ranging and full of surprises, featuring everything from the London Tube map to toothbrushes. Also hosts some of London’s best temporary exhibitions, over the years hosting everything from how we’d design a society on Mars, to Barbie, to the design of football.

My personal take on
The Design Museum is one of my favourite museums in London. Its temporary exhibits are pretty much always top draw. They’re usually innovative, well-presented and thought-provoking, worth visiting even if they’re about something you might not think you’re interested in (e.g. my girlfriend loved the football exhibition they put on a few years ago).

And the permanent exhibition is really excellent and wide-ranging. I’ve visited it multiple times, but always manage to find something new. If you’ve not been before, go.
