My personal take on
Across the river and further West in Pimlico, the Tate Britain is the Tate Modern’s slightly less bold, but almost-as-impressive, older sister. Set in a former penitentiary a stones throw from Westminster, the Tate Britain has been open since 1892 and showcases British art from the 1500s onwards.

The museum is set out chronologically, starting from 1545 and moving through British art history, featuring masterpieces from some of our greatest artists: William Blake, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and David Hockney. There’s an emphasis on 20th century art. The Tate Britain also features nine rooms of ‘the father of modern art’, JMW Turner. Each year it also exhibits the shortlisted works for the Turner Prize.

Temporary exhibitions at the Tate Britain have, in recent years, been both bold and excellent – such as Women in Revolt! Art and Activism in the UK 1970-1990, which ended in April 2024. It’s definitely worth checking out what they have on. As with many other London museums, the permanent collection is free, but temporary exhibitions aren’t.
