What it is

Museum tags: Art; Contemporary art; Modern art

One of London’s premier art galleries, famous for its absolutely ginormous collection of 20th and 21st century art, and blockbuster temporary exhibitions. You could spend all day exploring its free permanent collection and still not see everything. For me, the highlight is the ‘Artist and Society’ section, which explores the interaction between politics and art, featuring artists the world over. The ‘Start’ display is also a great introduction to modern art.

It’s also a great gallery for kids, with lots of kid-friendly interactive sections and activities.

Finally, the location is a blockbuster in its own right. The gallery is housed in a converted power station on the Thames, and its entrance hall (the iconic ‘Turbine Hall’) hosts immersive installations.

My personal take on Tate Modern
The Tate Modern is my favourite of London’s major art galleries. Everything about it is awe inspiring. The building – a former power station made of more than 4 million bricks, shouting its presence across the Thames. The cavernous Turbine Hall and the huge permanent collection, with heavy hitters from Rothko to Pollock, Matisse to Warhol.

It’s one of the world’s biggest modern art galleries – if it’s your first time, start with ‘Start’, with highlights from the collection, and also a good general introduction to modern art for kids.

My favourite section is Artist and Society, exploring how artists have responded to politics, society and conflict.
