What it is

Museum tags: History; Military history; Royal; Gruesome; Prison; Architecture; London history

London’s most famous fortress, the Tower of London has stood on the Thames for nearly 1,000 years, and was the site of many key historical moments, imprisonments and executions (and hauntings?). Today it’s one of the UK’s most visited historic sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Too many highlights to list here – but a few include the Crown Jewels; the White Tower (one of the oldest buildings in the city and home to Henry VIII’s armour) and the Tower’s prisons.

Also home to the Royal Armouries, which showcase the national collection of arms and armour. The collection has the claim to being the UK’s oldest museum, as visitors have been able to visit and see the royal arms collection for centuries.
