Bologna & Emilia-Romagna
Bologna is one of those cities that deserves more love. Despite having some of the best food in Italy (and yes, that really is saying something) and a cultural scene most cities can only dream of, it’s so often skipped by tourists.
It’s a city of contrasts – blending a progressive, sometimes rebellious spirit with an academic reputation that dates back centuries. Home to the oldest university in the western world, Bologna was once Europe’s centre of learning. Visually, it’s one of my favourite places in Italy: those deep red walls and endless porticoes give it a look – and atmosphere – all its own.
But Bologna is just the start. Emilia-Romagna is full of towns and cities worth your time: foodie-heaven Parma and Modena, the home of Pavarotti and balsamic vinegar; medieval Ferrara; and Ravenna, known for its stunning religious art.
This page brings together all my guides to this underrated Italian region.
